Otis Spann, originally from Jackson, Mississippi, was born March 21, 1930. He was of a younger generation than fellow pianists Sunnyland Slim, Roosevelt Sykes or Memphis Slim,but his early musical tutelage was very similar. In Spann's case, he was inspired to play the piano at the age of eight by a local pianist Friday Ford. Cyril O. Spann, Jr., M.D., joins Piedmont from Emory Healthcare. He is board certified in Gynecologic Oncology and graduated from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN. Dr. Spann has over 30 years of experience in gynecology and gynecologic oncology. During his time at Emory, he served as Chief of the Gynecologic Oncology Service at both Emory Midtown and Grady Hospital. Otis Spann (March 21, 1924 or 1930 – April 24, 1970) was an American blues musician, whom many consider to be the leading postwar Chicago blues pianist.
